Welcome to Pottery Mouth! You have discovered the delightful world of handmade miniature pottery.
Hello! I’m Lillie Frances and I’ve always loved pottery since my 6th grade Art teacher had us hand build and throw on the wheel. I didn’t really touch clay again until I started doing pottery in 2006. I began at Lincoln Square Pottery Studio (shout out to the wonderful owner Meg Biddle) where I learned the ropes and made my first pots. After a couple of years I began taking classes and doing pottery at Lill Street, and in 2022 I started working there as a TA and teacher.
For seventeen years I owned and ran a comedy club in Schaumburg Illinois called Laugh Out Loud (and all I got was this lousy tattoo!). I had the best job working with the most creative people, and I loved every minute of it. During this time, I did pottery as a hobby, and it allowed me to unplug from the stresses of running a business and literally and figuratively center myself.
During the pandemic when businesses shut down, the Laugh Out Loud cast and crew gifted me a miniature wheel. It brought me so much joy during a tough time, and I threw myself headlong into tiny pottery. I still love making large and functional pieces, but have truly found my passion in making one inch pots and teaching classes and workshops using the tiny wheel.
In April of 2024 I closed the physical venue of Laugh Out Loud (we are still available to travel and do entertainment and training at client locations). I am launching into this next chapter teaching and creating and selling my tiny wares. Join me on this journey! [sign up for email list here]
These miniature pots are adorable and not as simple as they may seem. If throwing on the wheel is like a dartboard, then the tiny wheel is like hitting the bullseye every time. I throw all the pieces myself on a 1 ¾ inches diameter wheelhead using my fingertips, some “regular size” pottery tools, and tools I’ve made or repurposed myself (for example guitar picks and bread bag clips make nice ribs, and nail art brushes are great for detailed painting). Pottery that has images or words on them are stamped and/or painted with underglaze when they are “leather hard.” The pieces dry overnight before being bisque fired in a kiln. Next they are glazed and kiln fired a second time for the final product.
